Boulder City Hospital
Boulder City Hospital has been operating as a non-profit facility for over
sixty years. The hospital seeks to earn the trust of the residents of Boulder
City, neighboring communities and visitors by meeting their health care
and related educational needs with compassion, integrity, sincerity, and
without regard to one's ability to pay. In order to continue to excel, the
hospital is constantly striving to remain on the forefront of medical technology
by maintaining a state-of-the-art facility. The hospital's medical staff
and support personnel are not only highly educated professionals, but are
also trained to be and understand the need to be compassionate care givers.
MountainView Hospital
MountainView's open-heart surgery program began in July 2001. Two open-heart
operating rooms were added last year in their $33.5 million expansion in
addition to the two cardiac catheterization labs that allow doctors to do
less-invasive stenting and balloon angioplasties. They have also developed
a cardiac rehabilitation program which provides patients with a comprehensive
medical management regimen, including exercise, nutrition, stress and weight
management, smoking cessation as well as medical and medicine monitoring.

Desert Springs Hospital
A 351-bed acute care facility located in southeast Las Vegas, this facility
has been providing for the healthcare needs of residents since 1971. The
hospital provides 24-hour emergency services, including a fast-track area
in the ER to treat less acute patients, and comprehensive cardiology services.
New facilities include a Maternity Center, featuring labor, delivery, recovery
and postpartum suites, a third catheterization laboratory, and a 107,000
square foot Medical Office Building and Outpatient Surgery facility.
Lake Mead Hospital Medical Center
Lake Mead Hospital Medical Center has served the North Las Vegas Community
since 1960. The facility now has 198 licensed beds. With the addition of
a three story patient tower in 1992, and a fourth floor in 1994, Lake Mead
Hospital Medical Center has provided the community with spacious and beautiful
new patient rooms. The growth of the hospital, however, has not taken away
from the warmth and compassion that is demonstrated on a daily basis to
everyone that walks through our doors. The medical staff consists of over
800 specialists and primary care physicians. Physician staff is continually
being recruited to meet the demands of the growing community. Lake Mead
Hospital has developed unique services to meet these demands with ongoing
quality improvement and needs assessments.
Mike O'Callaghan
Federal Hospital
The Mike O' Callaghan Federal Hospital (MOFH) is a joint venture between
the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Defense (99th Medical
Group Hospital, Nellis Air Force Base). It is one of only three joint ventures
in the country. It is situated on a 49-acre site adjacent to Nellis Air
Force Base, approximately 11 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas. The
facility encompasses 114 beds, with 52 designated for VA use. The VA beds
include 36 medical/surgical, 14 psychiatric and 2 ICU/CCU.
St. Rose Dominican Hospital
St. Rose Dominican Hospital is a member of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW),
a leading not-for-profit healthcare system guided by Catholic values. CHW
is sponsored by many communities of religious women, including the Adrian
Dominican Sisters. As St. Rose Dominican Hospital continues to expand the
breadth and scope of its services, its commitment to its mission grows as
well with expanding outreach and education programs ranging from programs
for under-served children and seniors to a full range of community classes
on health and wellness topics.
Summerlin Hospital Medical Center
Located in Summerlin, one of Southern Nevada's fastest growing communities,
Summerlin Hospital Medical Center features 169 licensed beds, all private
patient rooms. The acute care facility has adjoining outpatient services
for surgery, laboratory and radiology as well as two medical office buildings.
Sunrise Hospital and Medical
Center
Rated Consumer Choice #1 by the National Research Corporation. Sunrise stands
as the first medical facility that Southern Nevada's doctors, patients,
and even other hospitals turn to in an extreme medical crisis. Many of our
facilities, including our Renal Transplant Center and Sleep Disorder Center
are the only ones of their kind in Southern Nevada. Their sister facility,
Sunrise Children's Hospital, is Nevada's only hospital dedicated exclusively
to the treatment, health and well being of children. In addition to a staff
of pediatric specialists, childlife therapists and the latest in pediatric

Valley Hospital Medical Center
Valley Hospital Medical Center, founded in 1972, is a licensed 409-bed,
full-service acute care hospital located in the heart of Las Vegas which
serves the greater Las Vegas area and the surrounding rural communities
of Southern Nevada.
Ambulance Service
American Medical Response provides advanced
life-support ambulance service to Southern Nevada. Formed in 1954, the company
operates through a performance-based contract with the Clark County and
the cities of Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. The
City of Henderson's Fire Department provides life support ambulance
service to city residents.
Angel Plane/Miracle Flights
Angel Plane, formed in 1985, is a national non-profit charitable organization
which provides flights for children and families with serious health conditions.
Patients are flown, at no cost, to various treatment centers across the
nation. Since its inception, Angel Plane has flown over 6.5 million miles
transporting children and their families.
Airlife
Sponsored by Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, University Medical Center,
and St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Airlife is an emergency transport helicopter
that serves Southern Nevada and parts of Arizona, California, and Utah.
The program became operational in June of 1998.
Flight for Life
Flight for Life, Southern Nevada's first air ambulance program, is owned
and operated by Valley Hospital Medical Center. Formed in 1980, the program
dispatches helicopters to a four-state region including Nevada, Utah, Arizona,
and California.

The mission of the Lincoln County Hospital District dba. Grover C. Dils
Medical Center is to provide quality health services in a compassionate

UNLV recently moved up into the ranking defined by the Carnegie Foundation
for the Advancement of Teaching as "Doctoral/Research Universities
- Intensive". UNLV offers 170 undergraduate, masters, and doctoral
degree programs. The colleges include: School of Medicine and School of
Dentistry, as well as the finest physics, business, engineering, computer
science, environmental studies, and performing arts programs in the nation.
UNLV's School of Medicine is Nevada's only postgraduate institution dedicated

(CCSN)
CCSN serves over 35,000 students with programs on occupational training,
university transfer preparation, continuing education, developmental education,
and counseling and guidance. The Community College of Southern Nevada is
a fully accredited member of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
This status assures that the College's organization, structure, staffing,
and funding are equal to its objectives, that its governing board is functioning

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park
Historic Spring Mountain Ranch is located within the Red Rock Canyon National
Conservation Area, beneath the colorful cliffs of the magnificent Wilson
Range. The many springs in these mountains provided water for Paiute Indians
and later brought mountain men and early settlers to the area. The park
also includes such facilities as, tree shaded picnic area, scenic hiking
trails and a cultural events pavilion. The park is located 15 miles west
of Las Vegas, via Charleston Blvd in the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation
Area, on State Route 159 (the Blue Diamond Highway).
Boulder City Historic District
A collection of buildings from the 1930s remains intact, including the Boulder
Dam Hotel and the Boulder Theater.
Boulder
City Municipal Golf Course
It's a bit of a drive, but the greens fees are reasonable for this 18-hole
course. There is also a driving range, clubhouse and snack bar.
Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum
Established in 1980 to preserve historical artifacts relating to the workers
and construction of Hoover Dam and Boulder City.
Bruno's Indian and Turquoise Museum
Features a collection of earrings, paintings, bronze sculptures
and the largest collection of turquoise stones in the country.
Desert Princess
Cruise Lake Mead on a Mississippi-style paddlewheeler with full galley and
cocktail lounge, breakfast, midday, dinner and sunset dinner/dance cruises.
Grand Canyon/Bryce Canyon Tours
Based at Las Vegas, this tour company schedules several flights daily. From
air tours over Hoover Dam, Lake Mead and the west entrance to the Grand
Canyon to an all day deluxe tour including a motor coach excursion through
portions of the national park, lunch stops at lookout points and opportunities
to shop for arts and crafts. Air tours of Monument Valley and Bryce Canyon
in Utah are also available. A motorcoach tour to Death Valley National Monument
is another feature.
Hoover Dam
Built during the Depression, this is one of the largest public works projects
in history. A 35-minute guided tour takes visitors inside the 727-foot-high
structure, which used enough concrete to build a highway from New York to
San Francisco.
Lake Mead
Created by the building of Hoover Dam, this lake is twice the size of Rhode
Island with 550 miles of craggy shoreline. There are also lots of sheltered
coves for peaceful boating and fishing. Lake Mead extends into Arizona.
The surrounding desert area abounds with spectacular canyons and jagged
mountains.
Nevada State
Museum & Historical Society
Located in Lorenzi Park this museum covers the history of gambling, the
building of Hoover Dam and the days of atomic testing. All is studied here
through artifacts, graphics and historic photos. There are also exhibits
on anthropology and Nevada's natural history, and a display on how neon
has been used in Las Vegas.
River Mountain Hiking Trail
Five-mile, round-trip restored hiking trail built in 1935 by the Civilian
Conservation Corps offering breathtaking views of Lake Mead and Las Vegas
Valley.
Black Canyon River Raft Tours
Experience an unforgettable one-day exploration of the Colorado River by

Sky Dive Las Vegas
Sky Dive Las Vegas is Nevada's only full time skydiving school. They offer

Mountain Golf and Country Club
Semi-private course with 18 holes and was established in 1959. Desert landscape
course with cacti, yuccas, Joshua trees, lots of sand bunkers and two lakes.
Clark County Heritage Museum
Besides exhibits on gambling, there are five restored houses from 1904 to
the 1940s along with other featured buildings, a 19th-century print shop,
a historic railroad steam engine, and a recreated ghost town exactly as
it may have looked in its original northern Nevada location. Also featured
is an exhibit center housing a time line beginning about 10,000 years ago
and running up to about 1970.

A family-oriented tour describing and demonstrating the making of clown

Angel Park Golf Club
There are three courses totaling 36 holes designed by Arnold Palmer, and
highly regard 18-hole putting course at this local's favorite. The course
features re-creations of 12 of the most famous par-3s in the world, including
ones at St. Andrews and Royal Troon.
Auto Collections at the Imperial
Palace
With over 350 of the World's most spectacular automobiles "The Auto
Collections" is one of the World's largest & finest classic car
display rooms. "The Auto Collections" was created for those who
have always believed the automobile is much more than a machine, more than
a convenience, more than a necessity. It was built for those who have held
firm to the belief that a car is not so much a vehicle for transportation,
as it is a vehicle for our dreams, a vehicle for our memories.
Badlands Golf Club
Scottsdale-style 27 hole course, desert target golf, built around arroyos,
flows with natural terrain. Carts have SkyCaddie system that tells yardage

Barrick Museum of Natural History
Exhibits of archaeology, anthropology and natural history of the Mojave

Bonnie Springs Ranch
Besides year-round horseback riding, there's a petting zoo with pigs, goats,
buffalo, coyotes and turkeys. Ask about the all-day horseback tours. Stagecoach
rides are also offered on weekends and holidays. A good restaurant and bar
make it worth the 30-minute drive from Las Vegas, and the scenery is fantastic.
Callaway Golf Center/Divine Nine
Desert-style executive public 9 hole course is part of the All-American
Sportpark at the southern end of the Strip. Longest hole is 185 yards. Architect:

Canyon Gate Country Club
This 18 hole Course is festooned with palm trees and has an oasis atmosphere.
Guests of members are welcome.
Craig
Ranch Golf Course
This club is a great bargain and a favorite with locals. More than 6,000
trees make you forget you're in the desert and the greens fee is within
everyone's means.
Debbie Reynolds' Movie Museum
Located at the Convention Center Drive Hotel & Casino this spot showcases
an extensive collection of Hollywood memorabilia. There is an 80-seat theater
in which to watch a multimedia presentation complete with revolving stages,
thousands of costumes, props and set furniture and reminiscences from Debbie
herself (on tape).
Desert Inn Golf Club-Resort
Long and tight 18 hole course with undulating greens. Hosted Tournament
of Champions in the '50s and '60s, the Las Vegas Invitational in '80s and
'90s, Las Vegas Senior Classic 1986-91, and the 1996-99 LPGA Tour Championship.
Desert National Wildlife Range
The Desert National Wildlife Range was established May 20, 1936, and encompasses
1.5 million acres of the diverse Mojave Desert in southern Nevada. It is
the largest National Wildlife Refuge in the lower 48 states. The Range contains
six major mountain ranges, the highest rising from 2,500-foot valleys to
nearly 10,000 feet. Annual rainfall ranges from less than four inches on
the valley floors to over fifteen inches on the highest peaks. Perpetuating
the desert bighorn sheep and its habitat is the most important objective
of the range. The Range actively improves bighorn habitats by developing
new water sources and maintaining and improving existing ones. Numerous
other wildlife species share the range with bighorns.
Desert Pines Golf Club
The Carolina-type course near downtown Las Vegas has more than 4,000 pine
trees and a fully automated golf center with 58 heated (in winter) and misted
(in summer) hitting bays. The target greens are replicas of famous PGA par
3s.
Desert Rose Golf Club
This is a well-maintained course with a good layout covering 6,511 yards.
There's also a driving range, pro shop, restaurant and cocktail lounge.
Floyd Lamb State Park
This state park includes the Tule Springs Ranch Historic Area, where guests
in the 1950s checked in at the working guest/dude ranch to wait out the
six week residency requirement prior to obtaining a quick Nevada divorce.
The park offers shaded groves along four small fishing lakes. The park is
available for day use only. Park facilities include picnic areas with tables
and grills, restrooms, group areas and a walking/bicycle path that winds
through the park. Floyd Lamb State Park is located ten miles north of Las
Vegas via Hwy 95 to Durango, the Tule Springs Road.
Guggenheim Museum
The state-of-the-art gallery space for the new Guggenheim Hermitage Museum
is within the elaborate structure of Las Vegas's Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino.
This enclosed exhibition space houses masterworks from the Guggenheim and
Hermitage museums in a unique setting. The museum's exterior and interior
walls have been constructed with panels of Cor-Ten steel, which has never
before been used as the structure of a museum gallery. The lightly textured
industrial metal is intended to evoke the traditional velvet walls of the
Hermitage Museum while providing a stark modern contrast to the ornate architecture
of The Venetian.
Guinness World of Records Museum
Features all sorts of oddities. Kids love it! Lots of statistical information
available. There is also a "World of Las Vegas" exhibit saluting
all that is goofy in this town.
Kings Tut's Tomb and Museum
This new museum is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. It's a complete
recreation of King Tut's tomb as Howard Carter found it in 1922. Upon arriving
you're given a walkman, the tape contains a 20 minute audio tour with "Carter"
detailing exactly what you're looking at and why it was placed here. included
is the vestibule, passage, antechamber, annex, burial chamber and treasury.
You exit the museum directly into "The Source" gift shop, which
has a dazzling array of all things Egyptian.
Las Vegas Art Museum
The Las Vegans are trying to add some culture in their city with this art
museum built in 1935 from railroad ties. There are displays of western art,
and changing exhibits of local and national artists. The gift shop features
original art by locals.
Las Vegas Country Club
Course has cohosted the PGA's Las Vegas Invitational. Gently rolling, large
greens, well bunkered.
Las Vegas Golf Club
18 hole city course. Very mature, lots of trees, little water.
Las Vegas Indian Center
The Las Vegas Indian Center promotes the social and economic self-sufficiency
of American Indian people and the community at large.
Las Vegas National
Golf Club
Champion-ship layout, well bunkered public course. Former stop on PGA and
LPGA tours.
Las Vegas Natural History Museum
The Las Vegas Natural History Museum is a private, non-profit institution
dedicated to educating children and families in the natural sciences, both
past and present. Through its interactive exhibits, educational programs,
and the preservation of its collections, the Museum strives to instill an
understanding and appreciation of the worlds wildlife and ecosystems and
explore the human relationship with the environment.
Las Vegas Paiute Resort
First two of four courses on Las Vegas Paiute Tribe Indian Reservation,
20 miles north of downtown Las Vegas. Tee markers are rocks with desert
tortoises carved and painted in tribal colors of red, white, yellow, and
black. Elevated tees, water on seven holes, and no parallel fairways.
Legacy Golf
Club
This 18 hole, par-72 links-type course is well bunkered and creatively spread
out over a natural desert terrain. There's also a driving range, golf shop,
lounge, restaurant and snack bar on the premises.
Liberace Museum
The Liberace Museum in Las Vegas houses the legendary costumes, pianos,
cars, and furnishings of "Mr. Showmanship" as well as changing
exhibits about the arts. Proceeds benefit the Liberace Foundation, a non-profit
organization founded by entertainer Liberace in 1976. The Foundation has
awarded over $4 million in scholarships to university students nationwide
in all disciplines of the arts.
Lied Discovery Children's Museum
Consists of 100 hands-on exhibits on science, the arts and humanities that
teach as well as entertain. An everyday living section, where children can
pick up a job, earn a paycheck, deposit savings in a bank and buy groceries,
offers an opportunity to sample adult life. Another section allows children
to experience the use of a wheelchair and/or crutches and to feel what it
is like to be blind or deaf.
Los Padres Country Club
This 18-hole, par-70 course is semi private, so visitors are required to
make reservations 10 days in advance. It's located in a residential area
and is quite narrow with small greens. There's a clubhouse with bar and
restaurant, locker room and putting green, but no driving range.
Magic and Movie Hall of Fame
Located at O'Shea's Hilton Casino. This new and large exhibit on the second
floor celebrates everything magical, with some terrific items such as the
Water Torture Cell made famous by Houdini and famous ventriloquists' dummies
among the 5,000 exhibits. A roving magician wows the crowd with slight-of-hand
illusions and everyone loves the life-sized robot band. There's also a good
collection of movie memorabilia, but the emphasis is on magic.
Mirage Country Club
This nine-hole course is on The Strip, at the corner of the Flamingo.
Mirage Dolphin
Habitat
Steve Wynn spent $14 million on this outdoor habitat that houses seven Atlantic
bottleneck dolphins in four pools. These dolphins were already in captivity,
not caught in the open seas. And these creatures don't jump through hoops,
they just swim around in freedom while the trainers give talks. If you're
into captive animals, check out the tiger habitat inside The Mirage where
rare white Himalayan tigers belonging to Siegfried and Roy prance about.
Mirage Volcano
The Mirage made a big splash when it opened its 54-foot-high volcano. It's
a pretty spectacular sight when it erupts in a blaze, spewing smoke and
fire 100 feet into the air. Since it happens every 30 minutes from dusk
until midnight, it's easy to catch at least one or two eruptions while you're
in town.
Moapa Valley National
Wildlife Refuge
This 58 acre refuge located in Clark County was established to secure habitat
for the endangered Moapa dace, a small fish commonly found throughout the
headwaters of the Muddy River system.
Mount Charleston
The area known as Mount Charleston is made up of the 316,000-acre Spring
Mountains National Recreation Area which is part of the Toiyabe National
Forest. The mountains contain an astonishing variety of plant and animal
species, many that are found nowhere else. Inside the national forest, the
desert gradually changes into joshua and yucca forests and then onto juniper,
mountain mahogany, aspen, ponderosa pine and bristlecone pine forests. The
highest point in the Spring Mountains is Charleston Peak, which looms at
11,918, making it the third highest peak in Nevada. The area is located
approximately 35 miles northwest of Las Vegas and can be accessed by traveling
north on Interstate 95. There are many hiking trails and campgrounds throughout
the area.
Mount Charleston Golf Resort
9 hole course is located at 7,000 feet on the Kyle Canyon Road (State Route
157), 40 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Numerous elevations changes, picturesque
setting. Summer temperatures are often 30 degrees cooler than in Las Vegas
Valley.
Nevada Banking Museum
Located in the First Interstate building. The history of banking is chronicled
through displays of old currency, coins, gambling tokens, gold scales and
turn of the century loan processing calculator.
Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort Historic Park
The first permanent non-active settlers in the Las Vegas Valley were a group
of Mormon missionaries who built an adobe fort along Las Vegas Creek in
1855. They successfully farmed the area by diverting water from the creek.
Today, the park includes a remnant of the original adobe fort, which serves
as a visitor center with interpretive displays. Future development will
include the re-creation of many historic features and a full-scale visitor
center. Historic interpretation is and will remain the focus of the park.
Old Las Vegas Mormon Fort State Park
This state historic park contains remnants of the original adobe fort by
the first Mormon settlers along Las Vegas Creek in 1855. The fort serves
as a visitor center with interpretive displays. Future park development
will include the re-creation of many historic features, which is the focus
of the park, as well as a full scale visitor center. The park is located
in downtown Las Vegas, at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington
Avenue.
Omnimax Theatre
Movie goers recline in tilt-back chairs and watch a 70mm curved screen like
the one at the Smithsonian. You'll really feel like you're surfing in Hawaii,
rafting in the Grand Canyon or exploring space in the theater.
Painted Desert Country Club
Locals and tourists love this course because the scenery is breathtaking.
Tee boxes come right out of the desert floor, and if your ball misses the
fairway, it might hit a coyote.
Red Rock Canyon
This 197,000 acre area provides a 13-mile scenic drive, more than 30 miles
of hiking trails, picnic areas, and visitor center with exhibit rooms and
a book store. The unique geologic features, plants and animals of Red Rock
Canyon represent some of the best examples of the Mojave Desert. In 1990,
special legislation supported by the Nevada congressional delegation, changed
the status of the Red Rock Recreation Lands to a National Conservation Area
(NCA), the seventh to be designated nationally. This legislation provides
the funding to protect and improve the area. Red Rock Canyon National Conservation
Area is enjoyed by the local population as well as visitors from the United
States and many foreign countries. More than one million visitors each year
enjoy the spectacular desert landscape, climbing and hiking opportunities,
and interpretive programs sponsored by the BLM.
Red Rock Canyon Road
Red Rock Canyon is less then an hour's drive west of Las Vegas and has many
significant geologic features. The most significant geologic feature of
Red Rock Canyon is the Keystone Thrust Fault. A thrust fault is a fracture
in the earth's crust where one rock plate is thrust horizontally over another.
About 65 million years ago, it is believed that two of the earth's crustal
plates collided with such force that part of one plate was shoved up and
over younger sandstones. This thrust contact is clearly defined by the sharp
contrast between the grey limestones and the red sandstones. The Keystone
Thrust Fault extends from the Cottonwood Fault (along the Pahrump Highway)
13 miles northward to the vicinity of La Madre Mountain, where it is obscured
by more complex faulting.
Red Rock Country Club
First 18 opened in summer 1999. Club will have two Arnold Palmer-designed
championship courses, clubhouse, and a sports-fitness clubhouse.
Rhodes Ranch Country Club
Located in the southwest corner of Las Vegas, the course has water on seven
holes.
Royal Links Golf Club
Royal Links was named one of "Top 10 You Can Play" by Golf Magazine
in 1999. Conceived by owner Bill Walters to "reflect the spirit of
play in the British Isles." Each hole was inspired by a famous golf
hole on a course where the British Open has been played-No. 2 by the par-4
No. 7 at Royal Troon, and No. 10 by the Road Hole at St. Andrews. Rules
state, "In normal weather conditions a four-ball round should be played
in three and a half hours. At Royal Links a maximum of four and a half hours
is allowed." Architect: Perry Dye. 7,029 yards, par 72.
Secret Garden at the Mirage
Home to six rare animal breeds, including white lions and tigers. Designed
to increase public awareness of all endangered animals.
Sheraton Desert Inn Golf Course
The Sheraton Desert Inn Golf Course, is a championship course and is the
site of many professional golf tournaments. Lots of celebrities and political
figures play here, and the location is right behind The Strip, which is
very convenient.
Spanish Trail Country Club
Play on the club's three 9-hole sections rotates daily. Architect: Robert
Trent Jones Jr. Canyon and Lakes combination: 7,107 yards, par 72. Guests
of members welcome.
Stallion Mountain Country Club
Private course can be played by guests at more than 25 Las Vegas hotels.
North and South have same green fees. North Course: 18 holes, estab. 1990.
North Course is a traditionally designed course that was a host course for
the 1998 Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Classic. Architects: Jim Colbert and
Gary Bickler. 6,676 yards, par 72. South Course: 18 holes, estab. 1991.
Rolling terrain and elevation changes. Players must carry bunkers and water
to reach the small greens. In 1991, Chip Beck shot a 59 on South Course
to tie the PGA Tour record held by Al Gieberger. Architects: Jim Colbert
and Gary Bickler. 6,849 yards, par 72.
Sun City Las Vegas Golf Club
Rolling terrain, bunkers crowd fast greens. You can see the whole town from
the seventh tee. Course is open to the public, but residents are given preference.

Sunrise Vista Golf Course
Located on Nellis Air Force Base. Long, flat course with four artificial
lakes. For authorized use by active duty and retired military personnel
and Dept. of Defense civilian employees. Other civilians must be guests
of active duty or retired military. Architect: Halsey Design Group. Longest
combination of two nines: 7,051 yards, par 72.
The Strip
Once an 'Adults Only' playland, the Strip is turning more toward family
entertainment. The Las Vegas Strip is said to be the only scenic byway anywhere
that is more scenic at night than at day. It's more compact than most, too.
Every few hundred feet is a dramatic change of scenery. The giant Egyptian
pyramid yields to the medieval castle, which leads to a New York City streetscape
and Roman temple. Further ahead is a fiery volcano and a Caribbean lagoon
where a live sea battle rages between two sailing ships, and neon is everywhere.
Everything is larger, brighter, louder, faster and more visually over powering
on the Las Vegas Strip.
Tournament Players Club/Canyons
Designed and built using natural desert canyons, this high-end TPC resort
course hosts many classic tournaments. Daily-fee course. Architect: Bobby
Weed with Raymond Floyd. 7,063 yards, par 71.
UNLV Performing Arts Center
The UNLV Performing Arts Center has been serving the fine and performing
arts organizations of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the greater
Las Vegas metro area for over 15 years. The Performing Arts Center, now
a member of the College of Fine Arts, was founded by the now legendary Dr.
Charles Vanda, broadcasting pioneer and, after his retirement from CBS,
a leader in the Las Vegas arts community. Dr. Vanda founded the Master Series,
a subscription concert series featuring the finest artists from the world
of classical music and ballet which now bears his name. The Center is comprised
of three entertainment venues-The Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall, Judy Bayley
Theatre and Alta Ham Black Box Theatre.
Walker African American Museum
The Walker African-American Museum & Research Center is designed to
preserve and promote the history of people of African descent locally, nationally,
and internationally. The immediate goal is to build the permanent site of
Nevada's only African-American Museum. This temporary location offers exhibits
of books, magazines, dolls, stamps, postcards, trade cards, figurines, statues,
sports and political items, newspapers and clippings, signs, church histories,
biographies, prints, posters, painting, etc. that document the accomplishments
of people of African descent.
White Tiger Habitat
Royal Siberian white tigers, in a large water-accented habitat, can be viewed
daily at The Mirage. The rare cats are owned by Siegfried & Roy, who
breed them and use them in their show. If you are really captivated, you
can buy stuffed versions of the animals at the S&R gift shop just across
the hall. While you are in The Mirage, wander over to the hotel lobby to
check out the 20,000-gallon saltwater aquarium behind the front desk, home
to small sharks and other creatures of the sea.
Wildlife Walk
The Tropicana Hotel's two hotel towers are connected in a long walkway,
which they recently christened the Wildlife Walk. It is worth a tour and
there is so much to see. There are pigmy marmosets (small monkeys), butterflies,
other small caged creatures and admission is free.
Wizard's Secret Magic Show
This short special effects/magic show runs continually every 20 minutes
inside the MGM Grand's Emerald City.
Zoological-Botanical Park
Features African, Asian and Western American animals along with more than
50 varieties of plants. The children's petting zoo is of special interest.
Goldfield Historical
Firehouse and Museum
The recently restored Firehouse was built in 1906, at the height of the
Mining Boom, when the population was approaching 20,000 in Goldfield. This
museum features antique fire equipment and memorabilia, fully restored 1926
Ford Model T Calliope, original Goldfield Fire Truck Old #3, 1941 ambulance,
and a continuing growth of older Goldfield historical memorabilia.
Beaver Dam State Park
Beaver Dam State Park is Eastern Nevada's most remote park, and is a popular
area for hikers and nature enthusiasts who enjoy its primitive and rustic
character. Deep canyons, pinion and juniper forests, a flowing stream and
a small reservoir are the primary features, offering fishing, camping, picnicking,
hiking, photography and nature study. Facilities include campgrounds, a
group use area, a day-use picnic area, hiking and interpretive trails, and
hiking access to the reservoir (boats are not recommended). Beaver Dam is
open year-round, weather permitting, but travel is not advised during winter
months.
Kershaw-Ryan State Park
Kershaw-Ryan State Park is located two miles south of Caliente via U.S.
93 and State Route 317. It is situated in a colorful, scenic canyon at the
northern limit of Rainbow Canyon. Steep canyon walls tower over a long,
narrow valley. Early settlers here cultivated a garden of grape vines, trees,
and grassy lawn surrounding a spring-fed pond, providing a sharp contrast
to the rugged landscape. A picnic area, restrooms and trails offer visitors
nature study, photography, picnicking, and hiking.
Cathedral Gorge State Park
Cathedral Gorge is located in a long, narrow valley where erosion has carved
dramatic and unique patterns in the soft bentonite clay. Trails abound for
exploring the cave-like formations and cathedral-like spires. Miller Point,
a scenic overlook just north of the park entrance on U.S. 93, offers excellent
views of the scenic canyon. Shaded picnic areas and a tree-shaded campground
area are open all year. Hiking, picnicking, camping, nature study, photography
and ranger programs are the most common activities at the park.
Echo Canyon State Park
Echo Canyon State Park offers a 65-acre reservoir with a campground, picnic
area, group use facilities and boat launch. The park is popular for camping,
fishing, hiking and enjoying the beautiful scenery of eastern Nevada. Abundant
wildlife, a wide variety of native plants and unique rock formations make
exploration a favorite activity. Echo Canyon is located 12 miles east of
Pioche via State Routes 322 and 323. The park's elevation is 5,200' and
although it is open year-round, visitors should be aware of occasional snow
during winter months. Echo Canyon State Park is one of five state parks
located in Lincoln County, and is a popular area for camping, fishing, hiking
and enjoying the beautiful scenery of eastern Nevada.
Spring Valley State Park
Spring Valley State Park offers water oriented recreation at the 65 acre
Eagle Valley Reservoir. Boat launching, picnicking and camping facilities
are available. Visitors also enjoy hiking, exploring and touring the historic
Ranch House museum. The park is located 20 miles east of Pioche via State
Route 322. Spring Valley State Park is open all year, although snow may
make winter access difficult.
The Ash Springs
Rock Art Site
The Ash Springs Rock Art Site is typical of much Great Basin rock art. Petroglyphs,
or rock art which is engraved, is the dominant form found at the site. They
are etched onto rockfaces by pecking, abrading, scratching or a combination
of these techniques. All petroglyphs at Ash Springs are pecked and display
a wide range of line widths. These glyphs adorn rock surfaces that have
been subject to a noticeable amount of weathering and natural spalling,
as well as some marked human defacement. Pictographs, or painted rock art,
and cupules, or pit-and-groove rock art, are both absent from this site
but can be observed at other sites in the area.
The Crystal
Wash Rock Art Site
The Crystal Wash Rock Art Site, which is typical of much Great Basin rock
art, is actually a small network of interrelated sites. Petroglyphs, or
rock art which is engraved, is the dominant rock art form at Crystal Wash.
They are etched onto rockfaces by pecking, abrading, scratching, or a combination
of these techniques. Pictographs, or painted rock art, is only represented
in samll quantities at Crystal Wash. A third type of rock art known as cupules
or pit-and-groove rock art can also be observed (Marker #6). Cupules are
cuplike depressions or pits in boulders and are thought to be the oldest
form of rock art, first appearing in parts of the Great Basin 7000 years
ago. There is one example of this rock art at Crystal Wash.
Mount Irish
Rock Art and Archeological District
In 1865 prospectors were driven out of the area by Southern Paiute Indians.
The prospectors returned the following year and developed the Silver deposits
in the region, opening a post office in Logan City in 1867. Both historic
and prehistoric artifacts have been found in the Mt Irish area.
White Rivers
Archeological District
White River Narrows Archeological District was placed on the National Register
of Historic Places in 1976. The area is outstanding not only for rock art
but also for the impressive rhyolite cliffs. The District is located entirely
on lands administered by the Ely District Bureau of Land Management.
Ash Meadows
National Wildlife Refuge
Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, established June 18, 1984, is located
approximately 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas in the Amargosa Valley of
southern Nye County, Nevada. To date, over 23,000 acres of spring-fed wetlands
and alkaline desert uplands are managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The refuge provides habitat for at least 24 plants and animals found nowhere
else in the world. Four fish and one plant are currently listed as endangered.
Rhyolite Historic Site
One of the most photographed ghost towns in the west, the bottle house,
old railroad depot and concrete ruins are all that remain.
