AES Industries is opening a manufacturing plant in the former PolyOne Plastic plant in Wabuska, creating 50 to 75 new job, development officials announced Wednesday.
AES will manufacture and distribute frames and supports for roof-mounted HVAC systems in the long-vacant 63,000-square-foot plastics manufacturing plant in the small community just north of Yerington, under the direction of Plant Manager Robert Carter.
Economic development officials said the operation will have a significant economic impact for Mason Valley and Lyon County.
"The total economic impact over the next year is expected to be over $10 million," said Brad Woodring, economic development executive at Sierra Pacific Power Co. "It is important for the Northern Nevada region to work together in bringing these opportunities to our area."
The former plastics manufacturing facility, which had been run under different owners since it opened in the early 1980s, closed in the summer of 2003. Employees had been notified in March of the plant's demise.
The formal announcement was made by the Northern Nevada Development Authority, city of Yerington, Mason Valley Chamber of Commerce, CB Richard Ellis and Miller Industrial Properties. The purchase first was mentioned at last month's Yerington City Council meeting.
As towns nationwide compete for development opportunities, "it takes a team approach to successfully recruit new businesses," they said in announcing their "committed team approach."
Officials said the team worked for several months on providing critical information, streamlining timelines and approvals and maintaining open lines of communication throughout the process.
"When PolyOne closed its doors a few years ago, it was hard on Mason Valley and Yerington and all of PolyOne's former employees," said CB Richard Ellis Vice President of Investment Properties Aiman Noursoultanova, representing the seller. "We had a lot of sales activity on the property, but I'm thrilled that we were able to sell the property to AES Inc. They are a solid company and will be a great addition to the local economy."
