Rivers' End leaving California for Nevada

Clothing maker moving distribution center to Storey County

Rivers' End Trading Co., a business apparel distributor, has abandoned costly California for Northern Nevada's friendlier confines.

The Minnesota-based company expects to employ as many as 25 people and has begun hiring and limited operations covering 100,000 square feet about eight miles east of Sparks, Dan Overland, vice president of oeprations, said Tuesday.

The suburban Minneapolis company closed its Anaheim, Calif., center near Angel Stadium of Anaheim earlier this year amid rocketing costs and chose the LogistiCenter, a DP Partners development abutting the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center in Storey County.

"California is a difficult place to do business," Overland said. "We considered moving farther north, and to Las Vegas and Arizona.

"Logistically, Reno is fantastic. Reno really stood out. I can support our entire West Coast market in two days or less. Nevada is very conducive to doing business."

The addition of Rivers' End will help boost the overall economic impact in the region, officials said.

"The company was looking to escape the high workers' compensation rates in California to improve its bottom line, which it can do in Storey County," said Zak Gilbert, business development manager for the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada.

Privately owned Rivers'End focuses primarily on the uniform industry as well as embroidered promotional clothing and items with business logos, Overland said. He would not disclose company revenues or other earnings details.

He said Rivers' End employs 11 people so far at the Nevada site and 160 people overall, including operations in Denver and Minnesota.

Overland said the 20-year-old company expects to be fully operational in Nevada by February and is looking to fill managerial and warehouse positions at higher-than-average pay.

He said those interested are asked to go to the site at 635 Waltham Way south off of Interstate 80 near Patrick east of Sparks.
